ICSM Food and Drink Business Insolvency News: Scottish baker switches off the ovens as it ceases trading with fears of a phoenix as it may ‘continue in some form’
By Harry Mottram: The long standing Glasgow company Morton’s Rolls has ceased trading although there are doubts over whether it may yet return after a carefully worded letter to the 250 staff. It read: “The directors have taken steps to ensure the business can continue in some form. But it’s likely this will be with a reduced workforce.”
Ian Carrotte of ICSM – the business group dedicated to ending bad debts and late payments for its members – said: “Some of the creditors of Morton’s Rolls might interpret that as a double speak for a phoenix. Essentially dumping the debt and restarting the business under a new name. Nobody knows but it seems a strange thing to say when explaining away what has happened.”
The BBC reported: “Companies House states on its website that there is an ‘active proposal to strike off’ the firm. Morton's Rolls accounts for the year to 31 March 2022 were required to be filed by 31 December and are now overdue. Last month, compulsory strike-off action was suspended on 9 February, two days after it was announced by Companies House.”
The firm is well known in Scotland for its crispy rolls and other products and began life in 1965. However, for the year to the financial ending in March 2021, the company reported a loss of more than a quarter of a million pounds with a turnover of more than £11.8m.
