ICSM Business News: 800 jobs to go with a massive blow to suppliers and hospitality industry as Doncaster Airport is set to close

By Harry Mottram: In an age of international air travel and the transport secretary endorsing the third runway at Heathrow Airport is seems counter intuitive that one UK airport is set to close.

That’s the reality for Doncaster Airport after the owners The Peel Group said it was the high costs of running the airport was no longer financially viable falling a drop in flight numbers. They said that they would start winding down operations from the end of this month (October 31, 2022) leaving around 800 out of work and a host of businesses left high and dry.

Ian Carrotte of ICSM said the situation was devastating for local businesses as closing an airport would leave a hole in the local economy and would hamper development in the South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire areas.

He said: “I don’t want to sound like a doomster but when something like this happens there is a danger that some suppliers won’t get paid in full as their clients shut up shop. My advice is to chase up all unpaid invoices ahead of the closure and don’t take no for an answer.”

In December 2011 Plymouth Airport closed when the lease holders Sutton Harbour Holdings enacted a clause in the agreement with Plymouth Council to shut it down – with an eye of developing the land for housing. A huge outcry took place as the passenger numbers were increasing while closing it hit the city’s economy which at the time was doing well. However, it had taken a knock earlier in the year when an Air Southwest service to London Gatwick ceased. With rivals at Exeter and Newquay the airport had struggled to expand but since it had opened before the Second World War it was still a blow for the Devon economy when it was shut. It has been mothballed – and could reopen one day although the lease holders still plan to build homes there.
