ICSM Business – print industry insolvency news: paper distributor folds plus list of recent insolvencies
By Harry Mottram: Further signs of problems in the printing and allied trades have come to light as the Portuguese paper distribution group Inapa (the HQ is pictured) is in financial trouble after its German subsidiary became insolvent.
Writing in the trade publication Print Week reporter Richard Stuart-Turner noted: “In a communication to the market published on Sunday (21 July), the business said it was informing the market of its intention due to a short-term cash shortage of its subsidiary Inapa Deutschland in the amount of €12m (£10.1m) for which no financing solution was found within the period established in accordance with German law.”
The firm began in 1965 and has grown to be an international group with outlets in Turkey, Spain, France and Africa employing some 1,500 workers. The firm appeared to blame a variety of factors for its demise citing a slowdown in the economy along with wars, natural disasters, and ‘a restrictive monetary overview.’
The firm said in a statement: “As regards the paper industry, the demand for paper has decreased substantially, due to a destocking process across all value chain, as to a real reduction of demand.”
Writing for Pulp Paper News earlier this year Markku Bjorkman noted: “The paper and board industry has witnessed a significant downturn in production and consumption in 2023, more severe than during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI). Preliminary figures reveal a 13 per cent drop in paper and board production among CEPI member countries, totalling 74.3 million tonnes. Additionally, consumption fell by 15 per cent compared to the previous year, influenced by external factors such as a challenging economic environment, prolonged destocking by industry customers, and high energy costs.”
Ian Carrotte of ICSM said: “The print industry as a whole has been in decline for over 20 years as publishing and marketing switched to the internet but some areas like packaging and labels have held up. However there has been a hike in prices across the board as fuel and energy costs have soared. It is not just the print industry that has suffered but pretty much most forms of manufacturing and distribution.”
