ICSM Printing and Allied Trades Insolvency News including the paper and pulp mill where 11 died in an industrial accident
By Harry Mottram: The trade publication Print Week has reported on the shocking industrial disaster at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging in the USA where a tank containing 900,000 gallons of a corrosive and caustic chemical solution ruptured killing 11 workers. The horrific nature of their deaths along with the health impact on residents nearby, the rest of the workforce and of the danger of the solution entering the water supply of the Seattle firm has shocked the nation. The disaster happened on May 27th, at the plant. The BBC reported that Cowlitz Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein said during an earlier news conference that 10 people had been injured and transported to hospital. Nine of the people injured are employees at the factory, and one is a firefighter, with burn and inhalation injuries.
Jo Francis for Print Week reported that the firm confirmed the workers would be paid as recovery work continued. She wrote: “The Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers union has reached an agreement with Nippon Dynawave that workers at the plant who are either unable to work or have been instructed not to work will receive full pay until “at least” 8 August. Around 400 employees were working at the site at the time of the incident, according to reports.”
Ryedale acquired from liquidation
Richard Stuart-Turner of Print Week has reported on Kalas Packaging buying up the business and assets of Ryedale Printing Works, which closed its doors last month. The Kirkbymoorside print business, which traded under the name Hortipak closed its doors in May over trading difficulties. He penned: “Michael Jenkins and David Adam Broadbent of BTG Begbies Traynor (Central) in York were subsequently appointed as liquidators of Ryedale Printing Works Limited on 22 May. Kalas completed the deal to acquire the whole business from the liquidators on 28 May.” There was no word on the firm’s liabilities when they closed.
Other printing news includes the Clowne based UK Printing Company which went bust reports Print Week, “…two years ago leaving an estimated deficiency of just under £720,000. It had sales of just over £2m prior to going into administration. Its goodwill and assets were acquired for £50,000 in a connected party pre-pack by S43 Trading, a newco set up by managing director Adam Robinson. This week calls to the firm went unanswered.”
Note: S43 Trading Limited trading as UK Printing Company (ukprintingcompany.co.uk) has no connection with UK Printing and the ukprinting.com website, which is owned by 3P Direct Limited.
